Whenever I pass through the GS Road, connecting Ganeshguri to Paltanbazar area of Guwahati, the emerging markets, trendy shops and showrooms attract me. But the slowed down traffic in this road is surely a dampener. Never ending line of cars and city buses kind of mars you shopping spirit. To add to that there is lack of parking space in the city. So half the fun ends up in the drive.

But once you reach there and if you have determined where to shop in GS Road markets or in Guwahati for that matter you have to be very very cautious so as not to miss the U-turns for particluar stoppage. A few of the shopping malls provide parking place also. But most of the time you haven to do with on-road parking which is risky and uncomfortable.

GS Road houses Pentaloons at Dispur, Big Bazar at Bhangagar, Reliance Digital at GS Road, Lachit Nagar, Ulubari in Guwahati, Hub at Ganeshguri, Soham Shoppe at Ganshguri etc. Along the GS Road you will find swanky showrooms of Arrow, US Polo Association, United Colors of Beneton, Aurelia, W etc. A few days back I happened to meet a housewife and loved to shop for her teenage daughters at Fancy bazar of Guwahati now has shifted loyalty to Ganeshguri markets and shops, for it is easy to locate and reach shops in this area.
The gorgeous and unique silk variety of Assam is gradually becoming exorbitant but that surely have some grounds. Read on to know why.
Sualkuchi, the Manchester of Assam is an area near Guwahati city which is famous for its natural silk yarns. Assam Silk as many love to call it traditionally weaved into different garments in Sualkuchi. In terms of weave, design, colour wearability and above all comfort, you will surely have a treat.

There are three kinds of silk threads commonly found in Assam-- all unique, beautiful and also honored. Paat (white silk), Muga or the golden silk and Eri or Endi the warmer variety. Eri used traditionlly to make shawls, Eri Chador (light shawl) and Barkapor(a huge shawl to cover upper torso) by men. Now Eri is also weaved to make waist Coat or stylish stole and ladies shawl. Paat and Muga are weaved into traditional Mekhela Sador(/chador/), Gamosa, saree, Kurta etc. I would love to quote Mahatma Gandhi at this juncture

"Every Assamese Women is a born Weaver...And she weaves fairy tales in clothe"

I mean to say that in tradition of Assam weaving is a very important aspect of community life and although numbers of weavers are shrinking now women have not stopped loving Assam silk and its mekhela sador or anything made of this fabric for that matter.

Paat or White Assam Silk and Muga the Golden silk are two extremely revered and sought after variety now a days given its status of highly priced possession. Assam silk has been becoming increasingly costlier due to the facts that

1. Decrease in forest cover in almost every part of Assam which is very crucial for sustenance of the silk worms.

2. Thread adulteration. Due to infiltration of low cost silks into the silk industry of Assam pure variety of Assam silk is suffering. A few years back the Assam Silk village of Suwalkuchi virtually remained shut under curfew when scores of superficial silk(allegedly Benaras silk) were burnt in front of shops).

3. Third party involvement into the business from weavers to buyers.

Despite the rising cost for both weavers and buyers alike the popularity of Assam silk is ever increasing. If you are invited to any Assamese wedding you are bound to be smitten by the beautiful dress of the brides and others. It is likely that any Assamese girl would attend a wedding reception in her favourite or her mother's Assam silk Mekhela sador only. And you would hardly find any word to describe her beauty in this gorgeous, resplendent and yet not gaudy attire.
It is quite familiar for an Assamese women to become cynosure of all eyes whenever she wore the traditional Assam silk Mekhela Sador. This happens particularly outside Assam or India. In fact women who frequently travels into other territories often need to comply with demands of Assam Silk Mekhela Sadors for their overseas friends whose staple dress is not Mekhela sador.

In Assam you will find shops claiming to have authentic Assam silk mekhela Sador in every big or small towns and cities in Assam. But you can take my words for it that not many of can stand up to their promise. You will shell out few thousands to grab one but there is no guarantee on authenticity of silk. So the question where to shop for Assam silk is always a valid one. Lack of awareness is rampant and silk mark is the last thing your seller could show. But don't get nervous. There are ways to find out authentic Assam Silk. How? The silk route here can be a physical trip to Assam's Manchester Sualkuchi where Assam silk is traditionally woven by Assamese weavers like those of Benarasi silk in gullies of Benaras and Gorakhpur, Chandouli etc. (Two years back Assam's Sualkuchi silk village was burning over the issue of sellers allegedly selling Benarasi silks in the name of Assam silk across Assam!) But by and large you will be buying authentic Assam silk and that too at a cost almost 30% lower than in other parts of Assam.

The other route is to take help of a local who knows about the local shops. An Assamese lady would be the most helpful.

Thirdly, Assam's Muga silk is bestowed with a GI tag. So hopefully you will not be hoodwinked by costlier/cheaper variety of unauthentic versions.

Finally, you can rely on Artfed Jagran outlets of Assam in almost all district headquarters and airports. Artfed shops are Assam Govt affiliated shops where you can rely on. For Jagran(artfed shop) I hope to come up with a list of Phone numbers of all Jagran shops in near future.

Last but not the least Trade Fairs organized by various organizations and also Assam government's handicraft dept. You can time your visit during the last and first couple of months of any year to visit maximum number of fairs.
Whenever I think about Shopping in Guwahati, nostalgic memories of evening at Paltanbazar area of Guwahati comes to my mind. As a kid we were awestruck by the claustrophobic atmosphere of Paltanbazar. Hurly burly of fly-by-night

shoppers ogling and touching goods displayed by incessantly shouting hawkers would often compel ups to leave that place in a jiffy, but minds would be filled by the brightly displayed knick knacks and toys and the cacophony of the hawkers. That place was no less than some wonderland.

Later when we grew up the magnificence of that place also reduced like many other things in life. But still when I plan a non-virtual shopping at the city of Guwhati that night vision of Paltanbazar would come to my mind. I think this must have happen to many other people who have lived life in other lesser known towns and villages of Assam and needed to come to the city of Guwahati for various reasons.

As I have told earlier the buyers in the Paltanbazar area were and are mostly travellers. For road and rail Travellers from the entire the North East Paltanbazar is the unavoidable rendezvous. So things required in a journey are obvious choice of the buyers in that area. In a bid to please members leaving back at home the buyers would often buy toys and accessories in a hurry and it was obvious that the hawkers would have thrived on the hurried sellers who were either reluctant or not-so-expert in jaw-biting bargains. As for myself I became aware Fancy Bazar of Guwahati which is considered the mecca of shopping in Guwahati. People not only from other places of Assam but also from the entire North East would like to throng in the Fancy Bazar for a good deal in their shopping. For weddings, for puja and Bihu Shopping Fancy bazar have served like one stop destination including the Lakhtokia area where you would find cheaper version of every branded goods from watch to shoes to handbags. But as days are passing by, the advent of hub, and branded showrooms and departmental stores in areas like Dispur, Bhangagarh etc and the unavoidable trafficcongestion of Guwahati, lack of adequate parking facilities in and around Fancy and often lack of attractive food joints shoppers have perhaps shifted loyalty to first departmental stores and then to the eCommerce giants like flipkart, Myntra etc who would save you from venturing out in heat and traffic jam, bargains and wasting your valuable time in long travels.

Even than we as shoppaholics could discuss shopping experience in Guwahati, favourite destinations for speciafic items and shopping tips, location ideas for a fulfilling shopping experience in Guwahati. Hope tips would come pouring and my readers won''t mind sharing happy and unhappy shopping experinces in and around Guwahati.
